Nearly everybody needs some kind of shared storage for their documents and other files, even small one user setups often have more than one PC or a desktop and a laptop and therefore have some sharing requirements. There are various ways to achieve small scale sharing, one way such way, if you have a local area network of some kind, is to use a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. There are several commercial NAS boxes on the market that work very well for this, but can prove costly for smaller companies. If you have a spare old PC lying around, there is a low cost alternative to a commercial solution in the form of the open source project FreeNAS. There is a wealth of information around the net about FreeNAS, including on the FreeNAS Project Web Site. Installation and setup is fairly straight forward, however as a service available exclusively to Manchester and Salford based customers, I will install and configure FreeNAS onsite for you. In order to take advantage of this service, you must already have the hardware available to install FreeNAS on. Generally speaking FreeNAS will run on any PC that isn't too old that has at least 128 meg of memory. Hard drive requirements will obviously depend on the size and volume of documents and files you wish to store, as a general rule I would suggest you would need disk space of at least double your current storage. FreeNAS can also utilise RAID technology to make it a fully redundant storage server. The price of this service is £75 (plus travelling expenses depending on location) and includes :-
Please Note: The above price does not include any new hardware and I'd be expecting the existing PC ready to be reused by the FreeNAS software. The installation will also completely wipe any data stored on the existing PC and it is your responsibility to make any backup of this data before I arrive onsite.
